This Carved Maori Tekoteko with Patu is a striking figure, especially with the hand raised and holding a patu.
The Maori Tekoteko figure is a carved human form, seen either freestanding or attached to the gable of a Maori meeting house or entranceway onto the marae. It is often carved in a fighting stance like this one, as a form of challenge to any visitors to the marae. If the visitors were friendly, the tekoteko would then confer protection.
Embellished with paua shell eyes, the tekoteko is carved from tulip wood, a sustainable hardwood, and stands approximately 42cm (16 1/2") high.
